Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? It’s also the organ that gets exposed to the most environmental damage during your lifetime.

That’s not something we usually spend a lot of time thinking about – but we start noticing the effects at some point, typically in our thirties and forties. And some of the most frequently asked questions we receive have to do with the best ways to keep skin supple, firm, and healthy.

The good news? With a few small lifestyle tweaks, and some insider information, you can not only dramatically improve the health and appearance of your skin but help safeguard it against more cumulative damage. And it should form a firm foundation for a lifestyle where good self-care enables you to look better, feel healthier, and experience genuine contentment.

WHY DOES AGEING SKIN LOOK SO DIFFERENT?

One of the biggest factors contributing to the loss of your skin’s youthful elasticity, fullness, and tautness, is a decline in Elastin, the protein responsible for the fibres in your skin that are, well – elastic. Think of it as connective tissue, similar to Collagen, found in your dermis, the inner layer of skin. As Elastin decreases, your skin’s ability to return to its original shape after being stretched is diminished. If you add the appearance of blemishes and age spots, there’s a noticeable visual difference between your skin at the age of 20 and your skin at the age of 40. But, with just a little attention to some key factors, you can dramatically slow this process down and provide better protection for your skin.

AGEING SKIN vs AGED SKIN

For clarity, it’s helpful to define the difference between ageing skin (changes in your skin due to exposure and nutrient factors), and aged skin (the changes that take place later in life due to gene expression as your DNA starts losing its ability to repair itself).

Ageing skin is typically used to refer to the symptoms that steadily become apparent in your skin from your late twenties up to your late fifties or even sixties.  These include:

  • Looser skin, in addition to fine lines or wrinkles.
  • Dullness and reduction in skin lustre.
  • Uneven skin tone and pigment variations.
  • Dry skin that doesn’t hydrate as easily as it used to.
  • Blotches, blemishes, and age spots. (Although we love freckles!)
  • Rough, coarse skin texture.
  • Visible pores.

Aged skin typically only becomes an issue in your 70s, and it has more to do with function than just appearance:

  • Your skin starts thinning and takes on a translucent, more delicate look.
  • Your skin bruises a lot more easily.
  • Your skin is more fragile and takes longer to heal if you experience a bump, graze or other injury.

YOUR 8 SMART STEPS TO HEALTHIER SKIN

From our expert team at Down To Earth, here are the best things you can do for your skin:

1. REDUCE YOUR SUN EXPOSURE

  • Only do short sun exposure sessions of 15 minutes or less, twice a day, to ensure you get enough Vitamin D.
  • During summer, stay out of the sun between 10am and 3pm, when solar radiation is most dangerous.
  • Always moisturize your skin after sun exposure.
  • Be aware of unconscious sun exposure (for example, when driving!)

2. OPTIMISE YOUR WATER INTAKE

  • Drink pure, fresh water throughout the day (use reminders if it helps).
  • Remember that water molecules bind to Collagen and helps preserve your skin’s elasticity.
  • Water flushes out toxins; helps heal scars more effectively, and can slow the onset of wrinkles and loose skin.
  • Regular water intake doesn’t only benefit your skin – it’s also essential for brain health and good organ function.

3. GET ADEQUATE SLEEP

  • Your body manufactures Collagen while you sleep, repairs damage from UV rays, and increases blood flow to your skin cells.
  • Good sleep habits boost your immune system – which helps ward off skin inflammation and keeps you healthier overall.

4. EAT HEALTHILY

  • For great skin health, a diet rich in plant foods is the answer, packed with Vitamin C, and supplemented by foods rich in fatty acids.
  • This kind of diet fights inflammation while destroying harmful free radicals in your body and repairing Collagen.
  • Make sure your diet is rich in green and red peppers, broccoli, strawberries, citrus fruits, and kiwis – these are Vitamin C powerhouses.
  • For powerful antioxidants, consume green tea, Rooibos tea, and dark chocolate.
  • For Omega fatty acids, you should be majoring in naturally oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds, and especially cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.
  • Reduce your sugar intake as much as you can – sugar damages Collagen!

5. FOLLOW A GOOD SKINCARE ROUTINE

  • Use moisturisers. The natural fatty acids found in good moisturisers like the Revive Moisturiser and our Down To Earth African Potato Cream are incredibly healthy for your skin.
  • Moisturisers draw in water particles from the air to your skin using humectants, and also contain emollients, which strengthen your skin’s lipid barrier to prevent moisture loss.
  • Night-time facial care is incredibly important to protect mature skin.

6. EXERCISE IS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

  • Exercise increases blood flow and the delivery of nutrients to your skin.
  • It detoxifies your body and promotes skin cell renewal.
  • Toned muscles can pull skin tighter and promote a more youthful appearance.

7. LIMIIT YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE

  • Alcohol dehydrates your body and leaches it of nutrients.
  • It also promotes skin inflammation, leading to scarring and blotchiness.

8. STOP SMOKING

  • It’s not just your lungs – smoking damages your skin and dramatically increases premature ageing.
  • Smoking can be a very hard habit to quit. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your medical practitioner if you’d like to make that change.

SELF-CARE IS ALSO CARE FOR OTHERS

At Down To Earth, we believe in the power of kindness. It informs everything we do: our attitude and actions toward others, the way we treat the environment, and – just as importantly – the way we choose to treat ourselves. We understand that you can only pour out of a full cup, and that kindness to ourselves naturally translates into kindness and compassion toward others.

Good skincare and body care is part of that, and there’s so much more you can add:

  • Treat yourself to daily ‘mindfulness moments’ to reduce stress – simply take a random moment or two each day to breathe deeply and relax. (Or, as someone so elegantly said: “Breathe in joy and strength, breathe out wisdom and peace”.)
  • Be kind to yourself: look into the mirror and appreciate who you are, unique and valuable.
  • If the opportunity arises, book that Spa day – you deserve it, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So, in this month of love, let’s pause, spend some time on the things that bring us joy, and be gentle with ourselves as we practice an even better level of self-care.

Here’s wishing good health to you and yours!

PRODUCT INFORMATION: THE MAGIC OF NATURAL FORMULATIONS

For those who’d like to know a little more about why our Revive Skincare Products and renowned African Potato Cream are so effective at managing ageing skin, here’s a quick summary of applications:

REVIVE CLEANSER AND REVIVE MOISTURISERS FOR FACIAL SKINCARE

The Revive range consists of rejuvenating facial skincare products that are formulated with powerful plant extracts which work in synergy to boost skin hydration, enhance skin radiance, and maintain a youthful appearance. These are specifically formulated for dry, mature, or tired skin.

Revive Cleanser is a gentle and revitalising facial gel-cleanser that effectively cleanses away impurities without drying your skin. Made with evening primrose oil, jojoba, and aloe vera, it also soothes skin sensitivities and reduces redness and inflammation of the skin.

Formulation Magic:

With the Revive Cleanser, there’s no need to use makeup remover or toner! It’s formulated to cling to makeup and grime, and to remove it really, really easily – simplifying your skincare routine. And, in addition to eliminating the need for a make-up remover, the cleanser also acts as a toner.

A toner is used to remove excess dirt, balance the pH level of your skin, and provide astringent properties to help tighten your pores.

  • It removes oils and dirt in one, easy wash
  • It is perfectly pH balanced for skin at a pH of 5.5
  • The essential oils in our cleanser have astringent properties to help tighten pores, reducing the penetration of environmental impurities

Revive Moisturiser is a repairing day and night cream, made with shea butter, coconut, avocado and evening primrose oils, which softens and restores the skin, while enhancing skin radiance and helping to combat the signs of ageing. It promotes smoother, firmer skin, supports skin barrier function, and restores freshness to tired-feeling skin while replenishing essential nutrients.

Formulation Magic:

  • Although it has a high oil and essential fatty acid content, it does not leave an oily residue. The oils penetrate quickly and deeply into the skin, leaving a plump and well moisturised finish.
  • It also contains inulin, a prebiotic. Inulin helps support the skin’s microbiome for healthier skin and a super-strong barrier function.
  • It works well under makeup – no primer is needed.
  • It’s a multipurpose moisturiser, formulated for day and night use. By reducing the number of products in your bathroom cabinet, you reduce work, unnecessary decision-making, and you’re freeing up time and attention for the more important things in your life!

AFRICAN POTATO CREAM

African Potato Cream a preparation intended for body care. In addition to African Potato extract, it’s made with coconut, avocado and evening primrose oils (among others), and is a deep penetrating and hydrating cream used for severe dry skin and associated inflamed skin conditions.

Premature skin ageing can be triggered by dryness and inflammation, in addition to being a symptom or result of mature skin. African Potato Cream helps prevent prematurely ageing skin and is used to treat ageing skin, promoting a more youthful and radiant look. Although it’s a body cream, it can be used on your face, too. It contains a high oil and active ingredient content – and, since the skin on the face is thinner than the skin on the body, facial skin can be more sensitive. We recommend that you test the cream on a small patch of facial skin first before proceeding.

African Potato Cream can be used by your entire family, from toddler to senior. It’s really effective at reducing sunburn and sun damage, and it does wonders to prolong your tan!

Formulation Magic:

  • African Potato Cream is an effective anti-inflammatory salve, containing ingredients with potent anti-inflammatory properties.
  • It helps manage a variety of inflammatory skin issues, which are often age-related, as well as localised aches and pains.
  • The natural ingredients allow for long-term topical use without side effects.
  • It eliminates the need for multiple products in your medicine cabinet – saving you money and time!
